FIRST LEGO League

The FIRST LEGO League Tasmanian State Finals were successfully held On November 13th in the wonderful new facilities at Ogilvie High School.
A full day of Robotics fun, fascinating and entertaining project presentations on Bioengineering and great exhibitions of teamwork amongst some closely knit teams.
The success of the day occurred because of the terrific network of support and volunteers who worked very hard on the day – the project judges, teamwork judges, Robot games judges, IT support, photographer, lots of catering helpers (sensational BBQ, cup cakes and coffee) etc.
and of course all the students and their hard working mentors.
Thanks also to Luan Heimlich, Australian FLL tournament director, for coming down from Sydney to help us with the running of our tournament. Your help was invaluable.
We also had some great media – Southern Cross news, ABC radio news and the Sunday Tasmanian

The final results are as follows (Award, Team name, School)

Robot Performance Award: Taftothup, MacKillop Catholic College
Judges Award: Kevin, MacKillop Catholic College
Research Project Award: Rockin’ Robots, Hagley Farm School
Teamwork award: The Chevies, Ogilvie High School +
Technical Design award: Taftothup, MacKillop Catholic College

FIRST LEGO League has Three components:

ROBOT CHALLENGE – A team needs to program their Robot to negotiate a board full of tasks, accumulating as many points as possible in 2 minutes.
PROJECT – A team needs to present (lots of innovative ways to do this) a solution to a problem within the Biotechnology field. Research, presentation and innovation in presenting the solution go towards a final mark for the project.
TEAM CHALLENGE – Each team will be given a task on the day (unrelated to robotics or biotechnology) that will require skill and maximum teamwork. Judges will award points to each team.
